India - Andaman and Nicobar Islands - North Point Lighthouse


Established in 1972, North Point lighthouse is the best-known lighthouse of the Andamans. It is a 35m (115 ft) cast iron tower with lantern and gallery, painted with red and white spiral stripes. It is located on a promontory on the north side of the entrance to the harbor of Port Blair.

North Point lighthouse is an island belongs to the South Andaman administrative district, it is part of the Indian Union territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The island is located 06NM from the Port Blair town. North Point lighthouse 35 m high cast iron tower with lantern gallery. Painted with red and white spiral stripes, focal plane at 72 m above MSL, two White flashes every 12 s. Andaman’s best known lighthouse and picture of it depicted in the rear side of 20 rupees Indian Currency (old one). Located on a promontory on the north side of the entrance to the harbour of Port Blair, established in the year 1972. This Lighthouse station is equipped with Major marine aids to Navigation like 4th order optic system, 300mm, 04 panels with 230V/400Watts metal halide lamp, NAIS, standby LED flasher and RACON for the safe navigation of both national and international seaborne merchant traffic through the exclusive economic zone of the country. Accessibility to this lighthouse by sea route around 10 Km from Port Blair and then by walk of half a Km. The Lighthouse can also be approached by road from Port Blair and the distance is approximately 50 Km. The nearest Post office, Dispensary, High School, and Police Station all are available at Port Blair / Bambooflat at a distance of 12 Km (read more).

India - Andaman and Nicobar Islands - Havelock Island

I went to this island on 2nd January 2025 by cruise ship from Haddo Jetty in Port Blair. Bought this postcard and others and got the stamps cancelled at the Havelock Island's Post Office.



Havelock Island, officially known as Swaraj Dweep (transl. Self-Rule Island), is one of the largest islands in Ritchie's Archipelago, to the east of Great Andaman within the Andaman Islands. It belongs to the South Andaman administrative district, part of the Indian union territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The island is 41 km (25 mi) northeast of the capital city, Port Blair (read further).

India - Andaman and Nicobar Islands - Cellular Jail

The condemned cells in Port Blair's historic cellular jail. Once a penal colony, this famous group of islands now plays host to some of the world's finest Scuba Diving.

The Cellular Jail, also known as 'Kāal - Pani'. KAAL meaning time, i.e. once a prisoner goes there, he doesn't come back to the mainland and PANI mean water, as it is surrounded by water, but over the years it is now terms as KALA PAANI, was a British colonial prison in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The prison was used by the colonial government of India for the purpose of exiling criminals and political prisoners. Many notable independence activists were imprisoned there during the struggle for India's independence. Today, the complex serves as a national memorial monument (read further).

A Clown Fish seeks refuge in his traditional home, an anemone. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands have some of the finest scuba diving in South Asia.

Island sunset. At 92'E and only 11'N the sun drops quickly over the India Ocean and another day in paradise comes to an end.
