Chita (Russian: Чита, IPA: [tɕɪˈta]) is a city and the administrative center of Zabaykalsky Krai, Russia, located on the Trans-Siberian Railway route, roughly 1,100 kilometers (680 mi) east of Irkutsk and roughly 2,100 kilometers (1,300 mi) west of Khabarovsk. 

Population: 334,427 (2021 Census); 324,444 (2010 Census);

Pyotr Beketov's Cossacks founded Chita in 1653. The name of the settlement came from the local River Chita (read more).
