Canada - Prince Edward Island - Panmure Island Lighthouse
Panmure Island Lighthouse was built in 1853 and marks the entrance to Georgetown Harbour.
Sent by Emma, a postcrosser from Prince Edward Island, Canada.
"Built in 1853, located on the southwest extremity of Cardigan Bay. It marks the entrance to Georgetown Harbour, on the east coast of Prince Edward Island. It is connected by highway with the mainland on the South across a sand beach.
A lot of changes were made to the light stations and new things were being added as science got more advanced.
The light tower was constructed in 1853. It had a wooden octagonal tower. This light was used as a coast light serving considerable steamer, schooner, and fishing boat traffic. In 1909, the dwelling was built. It was reconstructed in 1958 as the building disintegrated over the years. It was made as a one and half storey. In 1908, the fog alarm building was put together. It consisted of a wooden frame structure. The garage was also built and it also consisted of a wooden frame structure.
In 1986, they had three options with regard to Panmure Island lighthouse: the first being that they rent it with a maximum lease of five years; the second being that they sell it with the building being removed from the property; and the third being that they sell it complete with a parcel of land. They chose that it would be sold as it would not be preserved as well if rented out to different people.
At present, the machinery at the Panmure Island lighthouse is operated electrically.

Taiwan - Green Island Light House of Green Island
Green Island Light House of Green Island, Taiwan.
Sent by Antika, a postcrosser from Changhwa, Taiwan.
This is from Wikipedia : Green Island (traditional Chinese: 綠島; pinyin: Lǜ Dǎo; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Le̍k-tó) is a small volcanic island in the Pacific Ocean, about 33 km (20.5 miles) off the eastern coast of Taiwan. In the 19th century it was known as Samasana Island and the Japanese called it Kasho-to (火燒島). The island is 15.092 km² at high tide and 17.329 km² at low tide. Administratively, Green Island is Lüdao Xiang (綠島鄉), a township of Taitung County and one of the county's two offshore areas (the other is Orchid Island, or Lanyu). Green Island is the ROC's fourth-largest island. It is accessible by airplane in eight to 12 minutes from Taitung City. There are also ferries capable of carrying over 250 passengers.
Green Island is now a locally popular scuba-diving destination for both locals and expats residing in Taiwan.
The island is primarily noted as the place of past and current prisons and penal colonies. Green Island first served as an isolated spot and place of exile for political prisoners during the martial law period of Taiwanese history during Kuomintang single-party rule (especially during the White Terror). After their release, many of the prisoners jailed between the late 1940s and the late 1980s went on to establish the Democratic Progressive Party, most notably Shih Ming-teh. Author Bo Yang was also a prisoner here.
The place where most of the political prisoners (such as Shih Ming-teh) were held was the Green Island Lodge (Lǜ Dǎo Shānzhuāng), where conditions were reported to be very bad. Oasis Village was the main penal colony. The prison was later closed, its interior is now opened to the public for visit.
The Green Island Prison (Lǜ Jiānyú) is also located on the island and has housed some prisoners that have been perceived to be amongst Taiwan's most dangerous criminals and gangsters. However, this has changed in recent years.

Taiwan - Eluanbi Lighthouse
Eluanbi Lighthouse, Kenting.
Sent by Michelle, a postcrosser from Taiwan.
This is from Wikipedia : Eluanbi Light(Chinese: 鵝鑾鼻燈塔) is a lighthouse located on the Cape Eluanbi, which is also the southernmost point of Taiwan, to the south of Hengchun in Pingtung County, Taiwan. Eluanbi Lighthouse is administrated by Directorate General of Customs, Ministry of Finance, Taiwan. The lighthouse is built between the Pacific Ocean and the Taiwan Strait, facing toward the Luzon Strait. Thus, the lighthouse has a splendid panorama. Also, the lighthouse is open to the public all year around. To present, the Eluanbi Light is called "The Light of East Asia", because its intensity is the most powerful among Taiwan lighthouses.
The Eluanbi Lighthouse was built in the Qing Dynasty, year 1888. Accidents in the area were quite often due to hidden reefs. In year 1888, an English architect W. F. Spindey, a member of Royal Geographical Society, was hired to construct this lighthouse as a guide for nearby ships. The lighthouse is the only armed lighthouse in the world, due to frequent raids by local aboriginal tribes then. The lighthouse has a trench around it and many gun holes on the wall.
After a concession by the Qing Empire when it lost the First Sino-Japanese War, Taiwan became a colony of Japan. During the Japanese rule period in 1898, the lighthouse was repaired after severe damages due to destruction of the First Sino-Japanese War. However, during World War II, the lighthouse was serious damaged by Allies' bombing.
Until 1962, the lighthouse was re-built as a conical concrete building with a white cover. To date, the lighthouse, although still functional, is now held as a historical monument admired by many tourists in the Kenting National Park. Additionally, there is an Eluanbi Memorial(see Gallery) of Taiwan Eight Magnificent Sceneries set in here, on the memorial the Chinese "Eluanbi"(Chinese: 鵞鑾鼻), sculptured on the surface, written in Wang Xizhi calligraphy style.

USA - North Carolina - Lighthouses
North Carolina Lighthouses. For centuries, lighthouses have been erected to protect ships and guide them safely away from low shoals. Each lighthouse has individual markings making it readily identifiable from a distance. Advancements in technology have made the lighthouses obsolete, but most are open to the tourists and visitors providing a historic view of times gone by.
