USA - Greetings From Along Interstate 95

Greetings From Along Interstate 95.
The Interstate Highway System comprises approximately 43,000 miles of expressways throughout the United States. Interstate 95 is the major north-south corridor in the Eastern U.S. linking northern Maine to South Florida. I-95 will be approximately 1,850 miles in length when completed; today over 1,700 miles are in use.

Sent by Claudia, a postcrosser from Florida, USA.

This is from Wikipedia : Interstate 95 (I-95) is the main highway on the East Coast of the United States, paralleling the Atlantic Ocean from Maine to Florida and serving some of the most populated urban areas in the country, including Boston, New York City, Providence, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, D.C., Jacksonville and Miami. It is one of the north–south routes of the Interstate Highway System, and replaced older U.S. Highways, mainly U.S. Route 1. The oldest sections of I-95, including several toll roads, predate the Interstate System; the route has yet to be completed in the Pennsylvania-New Jersey area. Construction of the missing connection is scheduled to be completed by the 2010s (tentatively 2017).

I-95's two pieces total 1,925 mi (3,098 km). The southern terminus of I-95 is at U.S. Route 1 in southern Miami, Florida. The highway heads north along the Atlantic through Jacksonville, Florida to Savannah, Georgia, and then takes a slightly more inland route through South Carolina and North Carolina to Richmond, Virginia. From Richmond past Washington D.C. to Baltimore, Maryland, I-95 follows the fall line, where the Atlantic Coastal Plain meets the Appalachian Piedmont. The highway continues northeast through Wilmington, Delaware and Philadelphia, after which traffic must use other roads to continue towards Newark, New Jersey until the completion of the Pennsylvania Turnpike/Interstate 95 Interchange Project (planned for 2017). I-95 crosses the George Washington Bridge into New York City, and then passes through New Haven, Connecticut and Providence, Rhode Island, around Boston, Massachusetts, and through Portsmouth, New Hampshire and Augusta, Maine on its way to the Houlton/Woodstock Border Crossing to the short New Brunswick Route 95, which connects to the Trans-Canada Highway.

It is the longest north–south Interstate Highway (five east–west routes are longer: Interstate 10 (2,460 mi (3,959 km)), Interstate 40 (2,555 mi (4,112 km)), Interstate 70 (2,153 mi (3,465 km)), Interstate 80 (2,899 mi (4,665 km)), and Interstate 90 (3,099 mi (4,987 km))), and it passes through fifteen states, more than any other Interstate; the Interstate that passes through the second-most number of states is Interstate 90, at thirteen. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, only five counties along the route — two in South Carolina, one in southern Virginia, and two in northern Maine — are completely rural.[5] According to the I-95 Corridor Coalition, the region served by I-95 is "over three times more densely populated than the U.S. average and as densely settled as much of Western Europe".

As of 2007, I-95 is the only non-cancelled long-distance Interstate in the original plans that has not been completed. A discontinuity exists between two separate sections in New Jersey due in part to the freeway revolts of the 1960s and 1970s; thus it is not possible to directly travel the entire length of I-95 without interruption, since the two sections are about 10 miles (16 km) apart from each other (though this gap is currently being addressed).

NEW ZEALAND consists of three main islands in the South Pacific Ocean, the North, South and Stewart Islands, covering an area of approximately 268,000 km square and having a population of over 4 million people of mainly Maori, European and Polynesian blood.

For all its small size however, New Zealand is a land full of scenic beauty which makes it unique in the world. It is a sportsmen favorite in which any outdoor sport can be accomodated. All New Zealanders' say it is God's Own Country.

Luxembourg - Mapcard

Various cultural places featured on the Luxembourg's map.

Sent by Diane, a postcrosser from Luxembourg.

This is from Wikipedia : Luxembourg (pronounced LUKS-əm-berg), officially the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg (Luxembourgish: Groussherzogtum Lëtzebuerg, French: Grand-Duché de Luxembourg, German: Großherzogtum Luxemburg), is a landlocked country in western Europe, bordered by Belgium, France, and Germany. Luxembourg has a population of over half a million people in an area of approximately 2,586 square kilometres (999 sq mi).

Luxembourg is a parliamentary representative democracy with a constitutional monarch; it is ruled by a Grand Duke. It is the world's only remaining sovereign Grand Duchy. The country has a highly developed economy, with the highest Gross Domestic Product per capita in the world as per IMF and WB. Its historic and strategic importance dates back to its founding as a Roman era fortress site and Frankish count's castle site in the Early Middle Ages. It was an important bastion along the Spanish Road when Spain was the principal European power influencing the whole western hemisphere and beyond in the 16th–17th centuries.

Luxembourg is a founding member of the European Union, NATO, OECD, the United Nations, Benelux, and the Western European Union, reflecting the political consensus in favour of economic, political, and military integration. The city of Luxembourg, the capital and largest city, is the seat of several institutions and agencies of the European Union.

Luxembourg lies on the cultural divide between Romance Europe and Germanic Europe, borrowing customs from each of the distinct traditions. Luxembourg is a trilingual country; German, French and Luxembourgish are official languages. Although a secular state, Luxembourg is predominantly Roman Catholic.

USA - Massachusetts - The T

Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority, also known as The T.

The T is the fourth busiest subway system in the United States (NYC, Washington DC, Chicago, Boston, San Francisco). The entire system -- which includes subways, buses, ferries, trains and trolleys -- averages over a million passenger trip each weekday.

Note : The Wikipedia says it's the fifth busiest.

Sent by Marti, a postcrosser from Boston, USA.

This is from Wikipedia : The MBTA Commuter Railroad serves as the regional rail arm of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, in the United States. It is operated under contract by the Massachusetts Bay Commuter Railroad Company (MBCR) a joint partnership of Veolia Transportation, Bombardier Transportation and Alternate Concepts, Inc. The current operating contract expires in July 2013.

The commuter rail system is the fifth-busiest commuter rail in the country, after only New York and Chicago area systems. The line's characteristic purple-trimmed coaches run as far south as Providence, Rhode Island, and as far north as Newburyport and as far west as Worcester, both in Massachusetts. The trains have two terminal stops in Boston—South Station and North Station—both transportation hubs offering connections to Amtrak, local bus and subway lines. As of FY2007, daily weekday ridership was 143,700.

Croatia - Kvarner

Multiviews of Kvarner and its map.

Sent by Jasmin, a Bosnian friend, who sent this from Croatia.

This is from Wikipedia : The Kvarner Gulf (Croatian: Kvarnerski zaljev, Italian: Golfo del Quarnaro (or Carnaro)); sometimes also Kvarner Bay, in Italian Quarnaro or Carnaro) is a bay in the northern Adriatic Sea, located between the Istrian peninsula and the northern Croatian seacoast.

The main islands within the Kvarner are Cres, Krk, Pag, Rab and Lošinj. The main portion of the Kvarner Bay is that between the mainland, Cres and Krk. A smaller body of water located between Cres, Krk, Rab and Pag is called Kvarnerić ("the little Kvarner") or Italian: Golfo del Quarnerolo (or Carnerolo)); .

The bay is notable for its depth, which allows for the city of Rijeka at its northernmost point to have a sea port that can handle the largest ships such as tankers.

USA - North Carolina - Outer Banks - Mapcard

Welcome to the Outer Banks.

Sent by 나비, a postcrosser from USA.

This is from Wikipedia : The Outer Banks is a 200-mile (320-km) long string of narrow barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina, beginning in the southeastern corner of Virginia Beach on the east coast of the United States. They cover approximately half the northern North Carolina coastline, separating the Currituck Sound, Albemarle Sound, and Pamlico Sound from the Atlantic Ocean.

The Outer Banks is a major tourist destination and is known for its temperate climate and wide expanse of open beachfront. The Cape Hatteras National Seashore has four campgrounds where visitors may camp.

The Wright brothers' first flight in a powered, heavier-than-air vehicle took place on the Outer Banks on December 17, 1903, at Kill Devil Hills near the seafront town of Kitty Hawk. The Wright Brothers National Monument commemorates the historic flights, and First Flight Airport is a small, general-aviation airfield located there.

The English Roanoke Colony—where the first person of English descent, Virginia Dare, was born on American soil—vanished from Roanoke Island in 1587. The Lost Colony, written and performed to commemorate the original colonists, is the longest running outdoor drama in the United States and its theater acts as a cultural focal point for much of the Outer Banks.

The treacherous seas off the Outer Banks and the large number of shipwrecks that have occurred there have given these seas the nickname Graveyard of the Atlantic. The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum is located in Hatteras Village near the United States Coast Guard facility and Hatteras ferry.
