Portugal - Algarve - Silves

This beautiful postcard of Silves town in Algarve of Portugal was sent by Manuel who lives there. It shows the town of Silves.

We'd like to thank Manuel for the history lesson : "The castle was built in the 9th century by the Arabs (Silves was then part of Andalus) The name 'Algarve' comes from "al-gharb" (the west) in Arabic. Although Silves was an important town in the Middle Age, today is a little town, about 10,000 inhabitants."

This is from Wikipedia : Silves (Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈsiɫvɨʃ]) is a town and a municipality in the Algarve, southern Portugal[1]. The city has a population of 10,800 inhabitants and the municipality reaches 33,830 (2001). The municipality of Silves is part of the district of Faro. Silves is the former capital[2] of the Algarve and is of great historical importance
