Sent by Jiri from Brno, Czech Republic

Kutná Hora (Czech pronunciation: [ˈkutnaː ˈɦora]; German: Kuttenberg) is a town in the Central Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 22,000 inhabitants. The history of Kutná Hora is linked to silver mining, which made it a rich and rapidly developing town. The centre of Kutná Hora, including the Sedlec Abbey and the Sedlec Ossuary, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995 because of its outstanding architecture and its influence on subsequent architectural developments in other Central European city centres. The historic town centre is also protected as an urban monument reservation, the fourth largest in the Czech Republic.

The large concentration of monuments and its inclusion on the UNESCO list make Kutná Hora a significant tourist destination. The town's sacral monuments are among the most important and most visited monuments in the Czech Republic. In addition to tourism, the town's economy also includes industry, which is represented by production of tobacco products and the electrical engineering industry (read more).

Denmark - Aalborg

Images of Aalborg, a city in the North Jutland Region of Denmark.

Sent by Fie Elise from Aalborg, Denmark.

Aalborg or Ålborg (/ˈɑːlbɔːrɡ/ AHL-borg, US also /ˈɔːl-/ AWL-; Danish: [ˈʌlˌpɒˀ]) is Denmark's fourth largest urban settlement (behind Copenhagen, Aarhus, and Odense) with a population of 119,862 (1 July 2022) in the town proper and an urban population of 143,598 (1 July 2022). As of 1 July 2022, the Municipality of Aalborg had a population of 221,082, making it the third most populous in the country after the municipalities of Copenhagen (capital) and Aarhus. Eurostat and OECD have used a definition for the metropolitan area of Aalborg (referred to as a "functional urban area"), which includes all municipalities in the province (Danish: landsdel) of North Jutland (Danish: Nordjylland), with a total population of 594,323 as of 1 July 2022.

By road Aalborg is 64 kilometres (40 mi) southwest of Frederikshavn, and 118 kilometres (73 mi) north of Aarhus. The distance to Copenhagen is 412 kilometres (256 mi) if travelling by road and not using ferries.

The earliest settlements date to around AD 700. Aalborg's position at the narrowest point on the Limfjord made it an important harbour during the Middle Ages, and later a large industrial centre. Architecturally, the city is known for its half-timbered mansions built by its prosperous merchants. Budolfi Church, now a cathedral, dates from the end of the 14th century and Aalborghus Castle, a royal residence, was built in 1550. Today, Aalborg is a city in transition from a working-class industrial area to a knowledge-based community. A major exporter of grain, cement, and liquors, its thriving business interests include Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy, Alfa Laval, and Aalborg Portland. These companies have become global producers of wind turbine rotors, marine boilers, and cement (read more).

Spain - Galicia - Santiago de Compostela (Old Town)

Cathedral : Portico of Glory (by Master Mateo, 1168-1188).
Portico of Glory is a masterpiece of Romanesque sculpture, located in the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral in Galicia, Spain. Santiago de Compostela Cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage Site designated in 1985.

Sent by Puri from Madrid, Spain.

The Portico of Glory (Galician: Pórtico da Gloria) of Santiago de Compostela Cathedral is a Romanesque portico and the cathedral's main gate created by Master Mateo and his workshop, on the orders of King Ferdinand II of León. The king donated to Mateo one hundred maravedís annually between 1168 and 1188. To commemorate the work's completion in 1188, that date was carved on a stone set in the cathedral and on the lintel that supports the richly ornamental tympanum. Under the contract made in 1168, if Mateo was to renege on the deal to create the portico at any time, he would have to pay 1,000 gold pieces (aureos). The complete three-piece set took until 1211 to finish completely, at which time the cathedral was consecrated in the presence of King Alfonso IX of León.

Originally projected as a four-part division, the portal was modified into a three-part format, which changed the proportions of the entire ensemble. Containing more than 200 works of scupture in Romanesque style, the portico is the artistic high-point of the cathedral and often considered the greatest work of Spanish Romanesque sculpture. The Pórtico de la Gloria consists of an inner double-arched porch and finished with an outer western façade. The lateral archivolts were left undecorated, which may have been due to time restraints to finish the gate for the Jubilee of 1182 and formal procession of pilgrims.

The pure Romanesque fabric was altered slightly and later encased with a Baroque facade. Before the facade was erected, the portico would be seen from afar and would drawn pilgrims up a large flight of stairs to approach it. Without door valves, the three large arches were decorated with angels and foliage and framed a view of the ciborium and altar at the eastern end of the nave. Figures representing prophets and apostles form the columns and jambs welcoming pilgrims inside the church (read more).

The bridge is also expected to improve connectivity between the mainland and the island and make it easier for people to travel to and from Bet Dwarka.

Sent by Amit from Gujarat, India.

The construction of the bridge was approved by Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari in 2016. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of the bridge on 7 October 2017. It was constructed at the cost of ₹979 crore (US$120 million).

The bridge serves about 8500 people living on the island as well as about two million pilgrims visiting the temples there. It was inaugurated on 25 February 2024 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Sudarshan Setu is a cable-stayed bridge, with cables in a fan arrangement, built using concrete pylons. The deck is made of composite steel-reinforced concrete with two carriageways. The total width of the bridge is 27.2 metres (89 ft), with two lanes in each direction and a 2.5 metres (8 ft)-wide footpath on each side. The solar panels atop footpath shade have capacity of 1 MW.

With a total length of 2,320 metres (7,612 ft), the cable bridge has a 900 metres (2,953 ft) long central cable section, making it the longest cable stayed bridge in India. It has three spans with 500 metre-long main span, the longest in India. The other 3 spans on either sides have length of 100 metres (328 ft) and 2 span 50 metres (164 ft) each. The approaches bridge on Okha and Beyt Dwarka sides have length of 770 metres (2,526 ft) and 650 metres (2,133 ft) respectively. Two A-shaped curved pylons supporting the bridge are 129.985 metres (426 ft) tall and radius of 300 metres (984 ft) leaning in backspan up to 22 metres (72 ft) from center of pylon. The total length of the road is 2.8 kilometres (9,186 ft) (read more).

USA - New York - Excavation Of The Deep Cut

Excavation of the Deep Cut
Workers excavate the Erie Canal through solid rock west of Lockport, New York, using hand tools, blasting powder, and horse-powered cranes.

Sent by Smith Benedikt from Ohio, USA.

In 1809, when President Thomas Jefferson reviewed New York’s ambitious plans for a more than 360-mile canal connecting the Hudson River (and therefore New York Harbor) to the Great Lakes, he dismissed it as “little short of madness” and refused to authorize federal funding. Less than a decade later, when New York’s politically savvy governor DeWitt Clinton pushed the controversial canal plan through the state legislature, opponents mocked the project as “DeWitt’s Ditch” and “Clinton’s Folly.”

Yet in 1825, just eight years after workers broke ground, DeWitt boarded a barge called the Seneca Chief and took a victory cruise along the newly opened Erie Canal, an engineering marvel, unlike anything America had ever seen. The man-made waterway, designed by untrained engineers, featured 83 separate locks, two massive stone-and-cement aqueducts to crisscross the Mohawk River, and a final ingenious “flight” of interconnected locks to raise boats over the 70-foot Niagara Escarpment (read more).

USA - Pennsylvania - Pymatuning Spillway

PYMATUNING SPILLWAY
"WHERE THE DUCKS WALK ON THE FISH"
Built in 1934 when the headwaters of the Shenango River were dammed, the carp at the Linesville Spillway at Pymatuning Lake soon became a tourist attraction.  The only place at a State Park where you are allowed to feed the wildlife. Pymatuning State Park sees over 3 million visitors each year.

Sent by Nancy from Pennsylvania, USA.

Pymatuning Reservoir is a man-made lake in Crawford County, Pennsylvania, and Ashtabula County, Ohio, in the United States, on land that was once a very large swamp. Much of it is incorporated into two state parks: Pymatuning State Park in Pennsylvania, and Pymatuning State Park in Ohio.

The first known inhabitants were the Mound Builders. Two of their mounds were flooded by the creation of Pymatuning Lake. The Lenape were living in the area when European settlers first came there. The lake is named for the chief who lived in the area at the time, Pihmtomink. The Lenape were pushed out of the area by the Seneca tribe, a member of the Iroquois Confederacy. The Seneca were defeated by General Anthony Wayne's forces during the Northwest Indian War, and left the area under the terms of the Treaty of Greenville. This treaty marked the end of Native Americans inhabiting the area.

The first settlers to the area were farmers, whose lives were not easy, as the land was very swampy and very difficult to reclaim. Farm animals that wandered off were often lost in the quicksands of the swamp, or fell prey to predators, such as foxes, bears, and mountain lions. The swamps were infested with mosquitoes that brought yellow fever to the settlers.

An unsolved murder case is associated with the then Pymatuning Swamp. In 1932, herpetologist Norman Edouard Hartweg, while searching for reptiles, ran into a body of a lady. The police concluded that she had been murdered elsewhere, but her identity was never confirmed, nor the murderer identified (read more).

USA - California - Acton

Acton, California.

Sent by Patty from Acton in California, USA.

Acton is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Los Angeles County, California, United States. According to the 2020 census, Acton had a population of 7,431.

Acton is a small residential community located between the Sierra Pelona Mountains and the San Gabriel Mountains, near the Antelope Valley. It is off the Antelope Valley Freeway (California State Route 14) south of Palmdale. Acton is roughly 20 miles (32 km) northeast of the San Fernando Valley, and 47 miles (76 km) north of downtown Los Angeles by highway. The town has a rural western theme which can be seen in its homes, commercial buildings and historical buildings, some of which date back to the late 1800s. The homes in the mountains around Acton have views of the valley below. In the valley are ranch style homes, often with equestrian facilities. While Acton is not a part of the Antelope Valley, it is grouped together with the Valley in the General Plan. Acton has a Metrolink commuter rail station on its border with Palmdale that is themed in an "old western" style and has been seen in various movies and commercials.

The town originally had served as a railroad camp from 1873 to 1876 when the Saugus-Mojave section of the Southern Pacific Railroad was under construction.

Acton was once considered for the State capital of California. California Governor Henry T. Gage (1899–1903) owned the Governor Mine, hence the name, and sought to relocate the capital to Acton. This effort ultimately failed and the capital was not moved from Sacramento. In the late 1880s, Acton started to become more of a ranching and farming community. In 1889 Acton's first hotel and its first saloon, the "49er" (formerly Sutter's Mill), was opened and is still in business today (read more).

Germany - Bremen - Weserstadion

Weserstadion, the home stadium for German football club Werder Bremen, located n Bremen, Germany.

Sent by Anna from Bremen, Germany.

Weserstadion (German pronunciation: [ˈveːzɐˌʃtaːdi̯ɔn]) is a football stadium in Bremen, Germany. The Weserstadion is scenically situated on the north bank of the Weser River and is surrounded by lush green parks (the name 'Werder' is a regional German word for "river peninsula"). The city center is only about a kilometre away. It is the home stadium of German Bundesliga club Werder Bremen.

Artists that have performed at the stadium include Bon Jovi, Michael Jackson, Tina Turner, Depeche Mode, Metallica, The Rolling Stones, Guns N' Roses and Van Halen, among others.

The stadium originally included an athletics track, but that was partially removed in 2002 when the pitch was sunk by 2.1 metres (6 ft 11 in) and the stands at the straights were lengthened to the new pitch. With this the capacity rose with about 8,000 places. In 2004 four office towers were built behind the north stand. These towers offer a restaurant and offices for the club and local companies.

After various previous renovations, the stadium was expanded, completely rebuilt, and modernized from 2008 to 2011. The façade was coated with photovoltaic panels and a new roof was built on top of the old roof supporting structure (the old roof itself was torn down). Both ends (east and west) were torn down and rebuilt parallel to the endline of the pitch, removing what was left of the old athletics track. Since the rebuilding's completion at the start of the 2011/12 season, it has had a capacity of just over 42,000 seats for domestic matches and over 37,000 seats for international matches. The owner of the stadium is Bremer Weser-Stadion GmbH, which is owned half each by SV Werder Bremen and the city of Bremen (read more).

USA - Nevada - Frenchman Mountain

Frenchman Mountain, Las Vegas, Nevada.

Sent by Jason from Las Vegas, USA.

Frenchman Mountain is a mountain located east of Las Vegas, Nevada. Made up of rocks similar to those found on the bottom of the Grand Canyon, Frenchman Mountain formed when faulting elevated and tilted the rocks followed by erosion, giving it its sharp triangular profile. The mountain provides an example of the Great Unconformity with the tilted Paleozoic Tapeats Sandstone underlain by Paleoproterozoic Vishnu Schist, which is some of the oldest rock on the North American continent, having been created about two billion years ago.

The peak lies on a north to north-northeast trending ridge about 2000 feet above the nearby valleys. Sunrise Mountain lies 3.6 miles (5.8 km) to the northeast adjacent to Nellis Air Force Base. The north end of the McCullough Range about 12 miles (19 km) to the south has a parallel trend. The River Mountains lie to the southeast. State Route 147 crosses its northern slope. A geologically rich area called Rainbow Gardens is located to its southeast, as is an igneous laccolith, Lava Butte. The Frenchman Mountain Fault poses a significant earthquake danger to the Clark County region.

It is likely named after the Frenchman Mine, which itself was alleged to be the site of a stock scam by a Belgian immigrant (mistakenly assumed to be French). It is commonly referred to as Sunrise Mountain, the name of a smaller peak to the north of Frenchman Mountain, because the sun rises over it in some areas of Las Vegas. The area from Cheyenne Avenue and Boulder Highway and Lamb Boulevard is commonly known as Sunrise Manor Township CDP.

Local conservationists have proposed the area, along with Gypsum Cave and Sunrise Mountain, be protected as a national monument (read more).
